Mr Binman Ltd. has installed a Mechanical Separation Plant. This state-of-the-art plant is based on a Dutch design and was installed in 2004 at a cost of €5m. This plant incorporates a highly automated process for the recovery of compostable organic material and recyclables from un-segregated residual commercial and domestic waste (i.e. wheelie bin waste).
The Mechanical Separation Plant combines a number of processes to sort waste into different fractions which are suitable for recovery:
1. Series of Screens remove Organic Waste such as grass clippings and vegetable peelings.
2. Magnets remove Steel cans and other ferrous metals
3. Eddy Current Separators remove Aluminium cans and other non-ferrous metals
4. Wind Shifters that remove light papers and plastics or Refuse Derived Fuel which are used for energy recovery in an industrial process i.e. a substitute fossil fuel
The residual waste material remaining after mechanical processing is sent to a Licensed Landfill for disposal.
